CURRENT PROJECT: November 2010
YIS-CAF is currently raising funds to assist people who have been affected by the eruption of Mt. Merapi.
Merapi Situation Update
November 25th 2010
Although the intensity of eruptions has decreased over the past 2 weeks the volcano continues to emit smoke and ash clouds which can be seen rising approximately 800m above the summit of the volcano. Multiple seismic and volcanic tremors are recorded daily and there continues to be threat from lava flows, avalanches, landslides and lahar.
The threat of further eruptions remain high. Merapi is at the highest level 4 alert. On 24th Nov, 2010, the State of Emergency was extended by an additional 14 days to the 9th December.
The death toll has reached 324 and there are 109,594 IDPs (internally displaced persons).
The No-Go danger zone varies between 10 and 15kms from the peak.
There appears to be no help from the national or local government offices to assist the people of Merapi once they have returned home to their villages, and there are no Non Government Organizations assisting the region either. All organized help is being directed to the people in the evacuation camps only.
As the villagers are returning home they are finding their farm crops have all been destroyed; landscapes have changed, rivers have changed course and water wells have dried up. Many villagers have to travel up to 10km to get water. Farmers that can access water do not have money to buy new seeds to plant because of they lost all their money with the destroyed crops. The situation is extremely serious.
On 27th & 28th November 2010, we distributed sembaco (basic food) to villagers in the Srumbung district. Thank you to all in Bali who donated to make this possible. Your generosity provided a week's worth of food for 100 families who have now left the evacuation camps and returned to their villages.
YIS-CAF's primary aim is to assist schools and children. We are currently assessing the Merapi situation and will be advising shortly where we feel our help will be best directed.
Please help us to help the people of Merapi!
The following pictures were taken on 27th & 28th November 2010:
Ibu Fila, from Sasanti Restaurant in Jogja, who we joined forces with to distribute sembaco.
Dusun Ngargotontro; this village now has no water at all.
Food for 50 families
|
Dusun Pugeran, Desa Krinjing; these villagers cannot afford to buy new seeds for planting. They lost all their last crops in the eruption and have no money. They have water, but cannot put it good use.
This man walked 5km to get water; half of that distance was uphill.
Destroyed crops
Thank you again to Bali for your generous donations!
PLEASE CONTINUE DONATING TOWARDS OUR FUND
to help those less fortunate than ourselves
